Learning Target:
Create fully rendered color drawings based on free choice subject matter.  Connect knowledge of value scale and rendering techniques to drawings made from observation and imagination.  

Tuesday 5/26
Work on your final free choice color drawing.  Due the day of the exam, fully rendered.  If completed please work on the exam paper.  Make sure your late, missing and incomplete assignments are turned in by Thursday at the latest.

Remember the exam paper must be written on the shared Google doc.  The Exam day is not a work day and there will be no time to write your paper.  If you don't have it you will receive no credit for the paper.

Tuesday 5/18 

Meet with me to show your written proposal and 6-8 thumbnails for the final free choice drawing.  Get started on Free Choice drawings, making sure your drawing meets the criteria of the project.

Week of May 11-15, 2015

Learning Target:
Create fully rendered color drawings based on free choice subject matter.  Connect knowledge of value scale and rendering techniques to drawings made from observation and imagination.  

Monday 5/11  
Color rendering with varied media.  How to build up tones and value scale with color media.  Make sure you have your sketchbook for class.  

Wednesday 5/13 
Develop more full color studies through observation and use of varied color media.  Written proposal for final free choice full color drawing due next class.  Must be typed using It's Clear format.  
  • Explain how you will create a complex composition and concept.  
  • Explain what color media you will use and how you will meet the criteria of strong craftsmanship with this media.
  • Explain why this subject is important to you.  How does it connect to your life?  
  • Explain what you hope to learn through this final drawing. 
  • Bring in any supporting photographs for next class.  These must be your own photos, not from the internet.

Friday 5/15

Create realistically rendered dramatically lit still life drawings based on observation.  Use gray scale paper and pastels.  One day project.

Intro to Self Portraits:
Watch and listen to the embedded PowerPoint about Self Portraits.  Take notes especially on the details of how to set up a portrait.  Draw along in your sketchbook to practice setting up the proportions. Using the mirrors, develop sketches and expression studies for the Self Portrait unit.  By the end of this class you should know which expression and position you plan to pose in for your self portrait.  Download the description of the unit for details on what to do in your sketchbook.  See examples as part of your notes and research click the link below.   Mrs. Bjork's Pinterest Board on Self Portraits

Create the everyday superhero posters that develop a monochromatic color scheme through art deco styled poster design.  Utilize complex, dynamic space and shapes with an awareness of negative space. 
Present and respond to peers' drawings through verbal and written critique process.

Last work day for Everyday Super Heroes Drawings.  Make sure work is fully rendered and ready for critique next class. 

Thursday 4/16

Critique of Everyday Super Heroes Drawings.  Make sure you have a typed up written artist statement for critique.   

Week of March 30 - April 3, 2015

Learning Target:
Create the everyday superhero posters that develop a monochromatic color scheme through art deco styled poster design.  Utilize complex, dynamic space and shapes with an awareness of negative space.

Create everyday superhero drawings in monochromatic color scheme, showing art deco style and realistic rendering as well as complex composition in the style of 1920-30s poster design.

Continue Monochromatic color scheme Superheroes project.

Week of March 23-27, 2015

Monday 3/23
Introduction to Value Unit.  Discuss the concept of value and how to develop mark-making sets to build up values in black and white and color.  View Value/Markmaking Pinterest Board for examples.  Develop sketchbook value scale in BW and Color.  Create 6 shape sketches and render 3 in BW and 3 in color to make them look 3-dimensional.

Briefly introduce the Super Hero Project.  Looking at the idea and discussing the Sketchbook requirements.

Wednesday 3/25 

Use Mrs. Bjork's Everyday Superhero Pinboard to research Art Deco and the idea of Super heroes.  Develop written brainstorm, thumbnails, and paragraph proposal for the Every Day Super Hero project.  See handout below for details.  Will check these next class.

Monday 2/23
Students will complete the 2-point perspective observational drawing by inking over their lines with Sharpie markers.  Students will also learn about button design for the Pewaukee Kiwanis RiverRun.

Wednesday 2/25
Students will complete their button design for the Pewaukee Kiwanis RiverRun during class today.  They will also begin their thumbnail drawings for the "Creative Twist" perspective drawing.

Critique of our line drawings.  Make sure you portfolio is organized.  Complete the rubric and digital post requirement.  Hang work in class room and photograph and then post to the link here. 

Wednesday 2/11  

Introduction to Perspective unit.  Creating the illusion of 3-dimensional space on a 2-d surface.  Using line to create illusion.  Box drawings to practice technique.

Friday 2/13
Finish our ten box drawings showing 1 and 2 point perspective.  Work from observation to develop a 2-point perspective drawing of the cafeteria or classroom. 

Week of February 2-6, 2015

Tuesday 2/3  
Full line drawing of still life, draw in pencil first and then ink the lines.  Details are critical.  Draw everything you see with line only, contour and interior. 

Thursday 2/5 

Choose your one best drawing from the set and hang in the room for critique.  Photograph this work and post to the Google Community..  Follow the prompts there for the online critique of our line unit.  Hand in your entire portfolio with line unit rubric and all line drawings in order in the portfolio.  See the assignment sheet below for the items that should be included. 

Week of January 26- 30, 2015

Monday 1/26:  Work on blind contour and contour drawings using  varied media to explore the element of line and the concept of observational drawing. 

Wednesday 1/28:  Review blind contour and contour.  Continue exploration of media and line with gesture drawing. 


Friday 1/30
Review types of line; gesture, blind contour, contour.  Create a full contour drawing of the still life.

Week of January 19-23, 2015

Getting Started: Day 1

Tuesday 1/20
 We will be setting up our online and in class room learning environment in the first days of class.  You will want to bookmark the following:

  1. This website assignment page
  2. The Google Assignments Calendar
  3. You may also want to subscribe to the Art Blog for the latest news from the art department including exhibit opportunities, scholarships and more. 
  4. I don't use School Fusion, so please make sure you've bookmarked this site. 

Supplies
For daily class you need your laptop and you also will need a sketchbook and number two pencil.  The Sketchbook should have at least 50 pages and be book or spiral bound.  8.5" x 11" or 9" x 12" is a perfect size. 

We will be making portfolios the first day or so of class.
Make portfolios and set up where we will store our work.  Define Drawing, set goals for the course.  Test our abilities in drawing. Mini critique of work. 

Thursday 1/22 

Introduction to Line Unit- Take notes and discuss the elements and principles of art as related to drawing.  Focus on Line.  Drawing with blind contour lines.  What are they and how do we use them?

Assignment Description: Final Exam
You will present your selective portfolio to the class.  It will consist of what you consider to be your top 3 Drawings created during this semester.  Your final free choice must be one of these! After the exam you will take your portfolio and sketchbook home unless I’ve asked to keep something to be photographed or put in a future exhibit.  The presentation will include two components: written paper and oral presentation of the actual works of art.
