DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for the student who is interested in developing an awareness of the historical context of art and its impact on culture. Art outside the classroom will be stressed by way of virtual tours, enrichment films and other research activities. Emphasis is on analysis of art work, not on art production. By studying a wide range of artists and art movements, students will learn to relate art elements and principles of design to their visual environment. Students that successfully complete the course and wish to further their Art History studies are encouraged to take AP Art History. This course, however, is not a prerequisite for AP Art History.

Priority Standard 3 - Students explain how artistic decisions about art making shape a work of art.
Priority Standard 4 - Students analyze form, function, content, and context to infer or explain the possible intentions for creating a specific work of art.
Priority Standard 5- Students describe features of tradition and/or change in a single work of art or in a group of related works.
Priority Standard 6- Students explain how and why specific traditions and/or changes are demonstrated in a single work or group of related works.
Priority Standard 7- Students analyze the influence of a single work of art or group of related works on other artistic production.
Priority Standard 8 - Students are able to identify a work of art.
Priority Standard 9 - Students analyze how formal qualities and/or content of a work of art elicit a response.
Priority Standard 10 - Students analyze how contextual variables lead to different interpretations of art.
Priority Standard 11 - Students justify attribution of an unknown work of art.
Priority Standard 12 - Students analyze relationships between works of art based on similarities and differences.
