You are going to be doing a bit of research about Creatures! What creatures did you grow up fearing, liking? Click the link and read the interview with toy and creature designer Andrew Bell. Then go to the NING Blog to respond.

Mr. Lamp's NING Blog response
Mrs. Bjork's NING Blog response
When you have finished responding to the NING blog please decide if you would prefer to work with ONE partner or alone. You (and your partner) must design thumbnails of 6-8 creatures. During this project you will create a story for the creature. Please consider the "5 W's and H" when creating thumbnails. Also, consider HOW your sculpture will be physically constructed and stand. You will be expected to answer these questions during a mini-conference with your teacher.

Wednesday/Thursday
Have a mini-conference with your teacher about your 6-8 thumbnail creature sketches. With your partner, or alone, create 2 full page, color sketches of your creature. One sketch needs to be a front view and one sketch needs to be a side view of the creature. After preliminary sketches are complete, the next stage in creating a sculpture is creating an armature.
The key to building a successful sculpture is having a good skeleton underneath, kind of like the human body! You will be creating this skeleton with paper, tape and possibly some recycled materials. The art term for the skeleton is "armature". This is what supports the sculpture and helps define your vision for what the design will look like. A strong armature is critical to a strong sculpture.

After you have researched successful tips for building an armature, discuss with your partner what materials you will use to create armature. You should begin building an armature today when you have a plan for the process. Decide if there are any recycled materials you will need to bring in to help with this.

Week of December 9-13
Monday/Tuesday
Students that do not have their two, full color plan drawings will finish these at the beginning of class. When the plan drawing are complete please discuss with your partner how you will create your armature. What materials will you use? How will you modify the materials? Do you have everything you need?
Once decisions have been made, begin building your armature using recycled materials. These materials may need to be cut, bent, formed, adhered, etc. Remember, the purpose of an armature is to create the underlying structure of the sculpture. Craftsmanship begins with the creation of the armature, so please make them as stable and secure as possible.
Wednesday/Thursday
Students will complete the construction of the armature today. When the armature is complete, students will learn how to properly apply papier-mâché and begin the application process.
If an armature is the skeleton of the sculpture, then papier-mâché can be considered the "muscles" of the sculpture. Students will build up the form during this process. Practicing good craftsmanship is essential during this process as well, ensuring that the papier-mâché is applied in a smooth manner.
Friday
Students will continue the process of applying papier-mâché to their creatures. During this process students should focus on building up the form of the sculpture and demonstrating excellent craftsmanship.

Week of December 16-20
Monday
Students will continue the process of applying papier-mâché to their creatures. During this process students should focus on building up the form of the sculpture and demonstrating excellent craftsmanship.
Tuesday/Wednesday
Students should complete any papier-mâché application to their sculpture today in class. During this process students should focus on building up the form of the sculpture and demonstrating excellent craftsmanship. Upon completion of the papier-mâché application, students should work on their creature's story.
Thursday/Friday
Students will begin working on the exterior of their sculpture. Working with a partner, decide what colors the creature will be painted, what type of additional materials are needed, etc.
A portion of the craftsmanship grade will come from how well the sculpture is painted and additional materials are added to the exterior surface. When painting, please ensure that no newspaper is visible, you are careful with your application of the paint, and all additional materials are carefully and successfully attached to the creature.
