DESCRIPTION
This semester-long course is an introduction to the practical and commercial applications of visual communications through the art of Illustration. Advanced knowledge of the elements and principles of design is required. Students will explore the art of Illustration by creating with digital tablets and iPads. Students will learn about effectively communicating a message through an illustration. They will learn about the collaborative relationship of the illustrator to art directors and editors to develop imagery that visually communicates a specific message for a client. This class will explore various types of illustration while students create their own works to advance their development of a unique visual voice. Students will learn about the history of illustration as an art form while exploring early traditional techniques and artists along with contemporary applications of illustration in 21st century design. Client relationships, career applications and critique methods will be taught along with digital portfolio development.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Art, Introduction to Digital Media; Drawing 1 strongly recommended

- Reportable Standard 2 CREATE: Plans and develops complex compositions through quality craftsmanship.
- Reportable Standard 3 PRESENT & RESPOND: Interpret and evaluate the meaning of art work through the critique process.
Priority Standards for Visual Art
Students will:
- Apply and utilize the elements and principles of design in the creation of visual art.
- Create and plan artwork that illustrates quality craftsmanship: evidence of technical proficiency and visual acuity.
- Create and plan artwork that illustrates complex composition: evidence of competent visual organization and design.
- Create and plan artwork that illustrates complex conceptual development: evidence of a clearly thought-out and communicated idea.
- Present final artworks for public display via internet or gallery exhibit.
- Analyze, evaluate and critique artwork in oral and written form using art-specific vocabulary to respond to and interpret artwork.
- Connect artistic ideas and works with personal, societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding.
