Unit 6: Nature Inspired Clay Vessel

Assignment Description: Nature Inspired Clay Vessel
Create a hand built 3-dimensional vessel (form) that is inspired from nature and utilizes slab and coil techniques to sculpt the textural details and express the concept.  Demonstrate the proper handling of materials, equipment and tools.

Week of February 17-20

Thursday 2/20
Students will be introduced to our new project on clay.  We will take notes on clay processes and vocabulary, and students will begin to create thumbnail sketches of the vessel they will create.

Friday 2/21
No School

Week of February 24-28

Monday:  Students will be introduced to our new project on clay.  We will take notes on clay processes and vocabulary, and students will begin to create thumbnail sketches of the vessel they will create.

Last chance to turn in any Digital Sumopaint assignments for grading!


Tuesday/Wednesday: Thumbnails due/ more directions on details and processes.  Demonstration on how to get started in clay.  Discussion of clean up and storage procedures.

Friday/Monday: Studio  Work Time on clay vessels.


Week of March 3-7

Monday 3/3 & Tuesday 3/4
Students will continue working on their nature inspired clay vessel.  Using hand building techniques they learned in the last class, students will use coil, slab, and score, slip, and join to create a functional piece.  Vessels should also have an inward and outward curve.

Wednesday 3/5 & Thursday 3/6
Students will continue working on their nature inspired clay vessel.  Using hand building techniques they learned in class, students will use coil, slab, and score, slip, and join to create a functional piece.  Vessels should also have an inward and outward curve.  The basic form of the vessel should be close to being finished by the end of class.


Friday 3/7 & Monday 3/10
Students will continue working on their nature inspired clay vessel.  Using hand building techniques they learned in class, students will use coil, slab, and score, slip, and join to create a functional piece.  Vessels should also have an inward and outward curve.  The basic form of the vessel should be finished by the end of class.

Week of March 10-14

Monday 3/10

Tuesday 3/11 & Wednesday 3/12
Students will view a demo on how to add texture to the surface of their clay vessel using various techniques.  With the rest of class, students will add texture to the surface of their vessel based on their chosen theme.

Thursday 3/13
Vessel construction complete by the end of class
Students will complete their clay vessels in class today.  Vessels should be inspired by nature, have an outward and inward curve, demonstrate texture, and demonstrate different hand building techniques.  Vessels should be left out to dry at the end of class today.  Mr. Lamp and Mrs. Bjork will begin to bisque fire vessels in two weeks.

Students will complete their clay vessels in class today.  Vessels should be inspired by nature, have an outward and inward curve, demonstrate texture, and demonstrate different hand building techniques.  Vessels should be left out to dry at the end of class today.  Mr. Lamp and Mrs. Bjork will begin to bisque fire vessels in two weeks.

Week of April 28-May 2

Monday 4/28 & Tuesday 4/29
Mr. Lamp's classes
All glazing on ceramic vessels must be done today.  Artist statements for the ceramic vessel should also be written and ready for next class.

Wednesday 4/30 & Thursday 5/1
Mr. Lamp's classes
We will critique our nature inspired ceramic vessels today in class.  Rubrics and artist statements must be submitted by the end of class today.

Week of May 12-16

Tuesday 5/13 & Wednesday 5/14
Mrs. Bjork's Class: We will be learning how to glaze our vessels.  Please come prepared for this.  You will also need your laptops.
