MONOCHROMATIC STILL LIFE

Getting Started Day 1

We will be setting up our online and in class room learning environment in the first days of class.  You will want to bookmark the following:
  1. This website assignment page
  2. The Google Assignments Calendar
  3. You may also want to subscribe to the Art Blog for the latest news from the art department including exhibit opportunities, scholarships and more.
  4. The Google Folder to digitally turn in Artist Statements and rubrics.

Supplies
For daily class you need your laptop and you also will need a sketchbook and number two pencil.  The Sketchbook should have at least 50 pages and be book or spiral bound.  8.5" x 11" or 9" x 12" is a perfect size.

We will be making portfolios the first day or so of class.

Week of January 24 - 27

Graffiti Art
What is painting?  What makes a painting good?  What are the characteristics of a quality painting?  Graffiti a board with your table team that answers those questions.  Use words, colors and images to design. Make sure the artists from your table have tagged their names into the design.  Check out my Pin Board on the topic for inspiration.

What is a Visual Journal?
How is it different from a Sketchbook?
How will we be using Visual Journals in this class?
Look at examples of Visual Journal Pages

Reflect on the Graffiti Activity and Develop 1-2 Visual Journal pages about your goals for this class.  Use paint, markers, collage any media to create your goals.  Make the page(s) true works of art!

Friday 1/28
This week we will begin our Monochromatic Still Life Paintings.  You will be working from the still life set up in the room.  Find a creative composition within the still life.  You don't have to paint the entire thing.

Things to remember for the still life:
  1. You must have a minimum of 3 objects in your still life and a maximum of 5.
  2. You need to think about positive and negative space and how your shapes will illustrate and define both.
  3. You need to fully render/blend your tones using one color + black and white to show a full range of value.
For more details about the assignment and the deadlines related to it click the button below.

Your goals, notes on brushes and painting techniques, worksheet on value, thumbnails planning your painting are due Thursday 2/2 at the end of class.   Make sure you show them to me along with a Sketchbook rubric.  Develop them with writing and Visual Journaling techniques.

Think about the 3 Cs of quality art making as you design your painting:
1.  Concept:  What's your idea?  How can you make your painting unique and interesting.
2.  Composition:  How will you design the 2-dimensional space of your painting?  Make sure you have the minimum number of objects and an interesting background.
3.  Craftsmanship:  How will you use the media?  How do you blend smoothly creating tints and shades of the color chosen.

Assessment in This Class

As always the artwork you create and the way you present it will influence the grades you receive in this class.  This year the district is moving towards Standards Based Grading.  With each unit you will see a highly detailed form that describes the assignment and shows what Reportable Standards and Priority Standards are being covered in the unit.   As we've done in the past you will participate in the critique process, which involves presenting your finished artwork and evaluating it in verbal and written form.  You will use the following two rubrics to self assess your work. Each is standards based and will be used to determine your grade in this class.  This year we will also be individually grading your artist statements with a separate rubric.  Both rubrics are posted here.  In some classes you will complete these digitally, while in others you will fill out a paper copy.  Each class will digitally turn in their artist statements to the Google folder for the class.
