Visual Art Department Partners with Drama for "Lend Me A Tenor" Production
The Visual Art Department spent several weeks in October developing art works that related to the themes of the Drama Department's Production of "Lend Me A Tenor". In Art Club members created a beautiful, large painting that became an integral part of the set for the play. Students incorporated colors of the set and a style to the painting that was reminiscent of the 1920s/30s time period. This coincided with the plays time era as well.
In Mrs. Bjork's Drawing 1 and Painting 1 classes students created works that related to the play as well. Since the production was set in a hotel room that harkens back to the 1920s and Art Deco theme students designed works of art that used that style as their inspiration. During the 1920s super heroes comics became very popular as well. Students were asked to consider who their everyday heroes are and how they would represent those people as heroes in art deco inspired poster designs. Students looked at examples of 1920s poster designs and art deco works of art. Students were asked to design bold, dynamic spaces with strong colors and art deco style. Students were given the choice to take a serious or tongue-in-cheek approach to the project. Students learned how to design and render in color. They also learned a bit of art history. Their works are on display in the atrium gallery space outside the auditorium at the high school. Stop by and see their clever and creative interpretations of the art deco theme. PHS Art Teacher to Present at State Convention in October
Mrs. Bjork presented at the State Convention for Art Educators held by the Wisconsin Art Education Association (WAEA). Mrs. Bjork presented Digital Gets Dirty: Experimental Printmaking Techniques with her colleague, Meagan Hahn. Both artist-educators earned their Masters Degrees in Visual Studies from Cardinal Stritch University and have exhibited their experimental prints around the Milwaukee area. Mrs. Bjork also teaches these techniques as part of the Digital Photography program here at PHS.
PHS AP Studio Art Class Focuses on College and Careers with Field Trip
Mrs. Bjork’s AP Studio Art class visited The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) to cap off a week of college and career focused experiences. Earlier in the week MIAD admissions officer, Cari Dulan presented information on how to apply for college and develop a portfolio that will win admission and scholarships. Students learned about the many careers available through the Visual Arts. On the class field trip students toured the school and also saw the new living spaces built in the heart of the historic Third Ward neighborhood (Milwaukee’s art center). After visiting MIAD students explored the various galleries and architectural gems found throughout the area. We discovered older art ranging from the 1500-1900s at Timothy Cobb Fine Arts and we also looked at local contemporary artists at Katie Gingrass, Tory Folliard and Elaine Erickson Galleries. Lastly, students had the opportunity to photograph and sketch in Catalano Square and other surrounding areas of the Third Ward.
