Standards Based Grading Details in Visual Art Department

Picture

Background and Rationale at PHS

The Visual Art Department did a great deal of research over the past 3 years as we redesigned and aligned our curriculum with the National Visual Art Standards.  These standards are the basis for the areas we've chosen to focus on at PHS in Visual Art.  The majority of classes we teach have their emphasis on learning to CREATE art and PRESENT & RESPOND to works of art.  Through art at PHS students also make CONNECTIONS to their own lives, history and the community.

In the past we've called these graded standards the 3 Cs (craftsmanship, composition, and concept) and we've emphasized that these are the way to a well-developed work of art.  You will see the 3 Cs embedded in the new wording for the standards.  What you see here is what will be listed in the Skyward gradebook for our classes. How a 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0 is determined is based on the National Standards Proficiency levels and the PHS descriptors posted here.

Reportable Standards at PHS

Reportable Standard 1:
CREATE Plans complex concepts for creative artwork that connect to history, society and/or personal life experiences.

Reportable Standard 2:
CREATE Plans and develops complex compositions through quality craftsmanship.

Reportable Standard 3:
PRESENT & RESPOND Interpret and evaluate the meaning of art work through the critique process.

4 - Advanced: Thoroughly achieved this standard, meeting or possibly exceeding the expectation.
3 - Proficient: Met the requirement at the expected level.
2 - Approaching: Partially meets, some parts incomplete, missing or lacking detail.
1 - Minimal: Minimally meets, lacking completion, missing elements, didn’t follow directions
0 - Does Not Meet: Didn’t do the assignment, didn’t turn in, didn’t follow directions. No evidence of meeting the standard.
