Learning Target:  Now You See Me, Now You Don’t
Create
a series of images that explores the concept of identity including, why and how we change and camouflage our identity through masks (real and implied), make-up and other forms of camouflage. Consider the purpose of camouflage in nature.  What purpose does it serve?  Why do animals have patterns?  Students will also look at the occurrence of patterns in nature and consider why patterns exist. Utilize pattern as an element of design as you develop your works.

Through this project you can explore a variety of choices to achieve your finished works.  Consider collage, prints on fabric, glitch, distress or alter your works to get the best results for your interpretation.  The final print doesn't have to be a traditional printed digital image.  Also consider drawing, painting, sculpture and other art media to merge with your photographs.  Be as creative as you'd like to interpret your concept!!!

Look at the work of these artists for inspiration. Begin to develop an idea of how you will interpret the concept of Identity.  When you are finished with your research go to the NING to post your thoughts.

Maurizio Anzeri makes his portraits by sewing directly into found vintage photographs. His embroidered patterns garnish the figures like elaborate costumes, but also suggest a psychological aura, as if revealing the person’s thoughts or feelings.

Johannes Stötter disguise people through nature. Above, she used elements of wood grain to cleverly disguise portraits. Which is camouflage ing a person into different things so you are unable to see the identity!

Picture
Vik Muniz is an artist who creates collaged/montaged works that are more installations.  The images are created with surprising materials and the documentary film Wasteland portrays a particularly intriguing collaboration with the poor of Brazil.

Picture
Glitch Art is not one artist, but rather the idea of messing with the digital code that makes up an image or video on purpose to achieve an altered or distressed image.  Glitch is often something that happens on accident.  What happens if you try to open an image file in software that normally isn't supposed to open it?

Liu Bolin  is a master of disguise. He can camouflage himself into almost any surrounding, regardless of how difficult it might seem. But that's not to say it's easy. Liu painstakingly spends up to 10 continuous hours working on a single photo to achieve the desired effect, one of absolute perfection. Mr. Bolin, who is both a sculptor and painter, goes through an incredible amount of paint and clothes to create each image.

Francesca Woodman was a young photographer whose work started when she was 10 or so.  She made photographs until her suicide in her early 20s.  Her work is really poignant and definitely looks at Identity and many other themes we're thinking about.

Masks and Identity:  Consider make-up, masks and other ways we transform or hide our identity.  Why do we do this?  What purpose does it serve.
Here's a great exploration from MOMA in NYC.
