Unit 3: Color Theory

Assignment Description: Color Theory
Create a color wheel that illustrates color relationships. Design a vibrating shape painting that
illustrates the relationship of colors (complementary) and utilizes asymmetrical balance as the
compositional technique. The shape painting shows how colors change and blend as they
intersect. Both utilize primary colors only + black and white.

Week of November 4-8

Monday/Tuesday:  Work on Color Wheels painting with primary colors + black and white to create all the secondary and intermediate colors on the wheel.  A-day, demonstration on how to blend and set up paints.

Presentation about Vibrating Shapes Paintings (A Day will do this on Wednesday)

Wednesday/ Thursday: Finish up the color wheels, handing in with grade rubric completed.  Begin developing 6-8 thumbnails to plan your color shape composition.

Friday: Thumbnails due for mini-conference with teacher; start sketching Vibrating Shape paintings onto sheets and possibly start painting.  Last Day to turn in Color Wheels for A Day students.

Week of November 11-15

Monday/Tuesday
Complete thumbnail sketch for the vibrating shape painting and have a mini-conference with teacher.  After sketch is approved begin to draw your design on to a piece of 18"x 12" piece of paper.  Select a color scheme and plan where the colors will be in your composition.  Remember, when two colors overlap you must mix the two overlapping colors to create a new color.  For example, if a red shape and yellow shape overlap, the overlapping shape will be painted orange.  After you have planned your colors begin painting.

Wednesday/Thursday
Complete the vibrating shape drawing on a piece of paper and plan how you will paint the piece (if not complete last class).  Begin or continue to paint the vibrating shape painting based on your color scheme and overall plan.  As always, strive for excellent craftsmanship.  Please keep the edges of your shapes crisp and clean, mix the paint thoroughly, and apply the paint evenly on the page.

Friday
Continue to paint the vibrating shape painting based on your color scheme and overall plan.  As always, strive for excellent craftsmanship.  Please keep the edges of your shapes crisp and clean, mix the paint thoroughly, and apply the paint evenly on the page.  Students that complete the vibrating shape painting today should complete a written artist statement and photograph their work when dry.

Week of November 18-22

Monday
Continue to paint the vibrating shape painting based on your color scheme and overall plan.  As always, strive for excellent craftsmanship.  Please keep the edges of your shapes crisp and clean, mix the paint thoroughly, and apply the paint evenly on the page.
