  • Reportable Standard 1 CREATE: Plans complex concepts for creative artwork that connect to history, society and/or personal life experiences.

  • Reportable Standard 2 CREATE: Plans and develops complex compositions through quality craftsmanship.

  • Reportable Standard 3 PRESENT & RESPOND: Interpret and evaluate the meaning of art work through the critique process.

Visual Art Department Priority Standards

Students will:
  1. Apply and utilize the elements and principles of design in the creation of visual art.
  2. Create and plan artwork that illustrates quality craftsmanship: evidence of technical proficiency and visual acuity.
  3. Create and plan artwork that illustrates complex composition: evidence of competent visual organization and design.
  4. Create and plan artwork that illustrates complex conceptual development: evidence of a clearly thought-out and communicated idea.
  5. Present final artworks for public display via internet or gallery exhibit.
  6. Analyze, evaluate and critique artwork in oral and written form using art-specific vocabulary to respond to and interpret artwork.
  7. Connect artistic ideas and works with personal, societal, cultural and historical context to deepen understanding.
Priority Standards Proficiency Levels
GRADING ORGANIZATION
Visual Art grades are calculated using a 100% summative grading process. Grades are comprised of the following:
  • Visual Journal/Sketchbook where students develop, research and create plans for their work.  This may also included digital planning such as a class wiki/ning.
  • Class projects and Works of art
  • Written and Verbal Artist Statements and participation in the critique process
  • Presentation of art exhibits online, in school gallery and the classroom.

Individual Assignments will be critiqued and graded at the completion of each unit of study. Students will complete their own assessment of the work, which will then be used as a guide for grading.  Work that is not completed by the grading deadline/critique will be graded as Incomplete. Deadlines for work will not be extended except under extreme circumstances, this includes artist statements.  Incomplete work must be completed in a reasonable period of time negotiated with the teacher and student. Missing critique due dates will result in the lowering of project grades because critique is one of our standards and student won't demonstrate proficiency if they do not participate.  Students will be assigned to morning resource until the work is completed to a satisfactory level.  Failure to finish work after assigned resource time will result in a lower final grade.  Exceptions to this may be made based on individual needs.

The development and presentation of a final portfolio will be required to pass the semester exam.  This portfolio will consist of work students have created throughout the course.  Students will be instructed how to choose work for their portfolio.  Work that has been previously graded will be considered as part of the entire portfolio for one grade and will not be re-graded individually.  Students have the opportunity to use information gained from the critiques to improve or change their work. Students may then choose to include their improved work in the final portfolio presentation at the end of the term.  A written artist statement and oral presentation will be required to pass the exam.

SUPPLIES/ Sketchbook/Journal/ONLINE
Students are expected to bring the following items to every class.
A sketchbook/binder (can be purchased or handmade)
A pencil
A flash drive at least 2 GB
A digital SLR camera strongly encouraged for photography classes. (School owned cameras are available for students to borrow to complete assignments.)
A free subscription to the class website at: http://phsvisualartdept.weebly.com
A free subscription to class wiki, Ning or Flickr if this is a digital class.

The sketchbook/visual journal (and online entries) will be graded using the Sketchbook or Wiki rubric.  Note that in digital classes the sketchbook may be digital and consist of work on a wiki or within a specified app.

This should include the following:
  • Notes from class lectures
  • Planning sketches and research for individual assignments & weekly sketchbook assignments
  • Written reflections both in sketchbook and online
  • Drawings/written entries completed outside of class that pertain to artistic development (some of these will be posted online).
  • Additional media, photos, and other elements to plan works of art.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS
Students will be expected to abide by the PHS rules and Success Skills.  Students are expected to act with respect for themselves, others and the classroom materials.  Disrespectful actions will not be tolerated.  Students are expected to work on art during the class period.  Students who choose to waste time will be asked to leave the classroom and will need to make up their work during resource or a detention. Any software, hardware or other technology-based equipment that is broken, stolen or lost by the student will have to be paid for and replaced by the student.

CHEATING/ PLAGIARISM POLICY
Projects are expected to be the student’s own idea and made by their own hand.  Found photos must be altered significantly to be considered original and part of one’s own work.  Original paintings or drawings used in digital imaging should be based on your own photographs or live observations.

ABSENCES (Excused and Unexcused)
It is the responsibility of the student to make up work and time missed due to absence.  This will require the student to schedule time during resource or before or after school depending upon art room availability.  It is preferred that projects and supplies do not leave the art room.  Deadlines for work will not be extended except under extreme circumstances.  Incomplete work must be completed in a reasonable period of time negotiated with the teacher and student.   Missing critique or other due dates may result in the lowering of grades.   Student may not demonstrate proficiency if they do not complete work.  Missing or incomplete work can also negatively effect Success Skills grades.  Students with excused absences need to make up missing work within a reasonable time frame that has been negotiated with their teacher.

DISTRICT GRADING SCALE- Refer to the Standards Based Grading Presentation for Details on the Scale
