The Pewaukee Art Department has had a busy spring making connections in the community through collaboration and art making. Whether designing for the Kiwanis Club or drawing and painting for the Memory Project students have put their art to good use making a difference in the local and global community.
The graduate profile of CARE, CONTRIBUTE and CONNECT is most evident in these visual art endeavors. Students went above and beyond the usual class work to extend the meaning of art making for a purpose.
The Art Club created portraits connecting us to Sierra Leone through The Memory Project. PHS was partnered with children from Sierra Leone and enlisted the help of a few non-Art Club artists to help create the 25 portraits. Students chose to work in media they felt comfortable using including acrylic paint, watercolors and digital painting/drawing. The results are fabulous and highlight each student artist's style through their interpretation of the young person. For more on the project visit The Memory Project website. The portraits will go to the children of Sierra Leone who live in poverty and war torn regions. It is a wonderful way to Connect, Care and Contribute.
This spring PHS Art students used their abilities with digital graphic design and digital illustration to partner with the Kiwanis Club on two of their community service events. Art students designed several works for the Pewaukee Kiwanis Club. Ms. Olson's student Kaitlyn Jaeger and Ms Bjork's student Heather Sunderlage created designs to support the Kiwanis' RiverRun event and the Summer Beach Party. Students designed a button for the RiverRun and a tee shirt design for the Beach Party. Congratulations to both these students on their excellent designs.
Ms Bjork's Digital Photography students will also be collaborating with the Kiwanis Club to photograph the Summer Beach Party. This is the first time that PHS students have been "hired" as volunteers to document the event. More to come on this as PHS art students Megan Bies, Jae Leveille, Morgan Koike and Kiley Clarquist will envision the event through the photo lens. Make plans to attend this great event on June 24-25
Another summer event is the Lifestriders Derby Days fundraiser sponsored by Lifestriders to benefit their families. LifeStriders educates and strengthens communities, by joining together to provide innovative and integrated cognitive and physical therapies, online, on our farm, and sometimes on the backs of our horses, to individuals and families with special needs, at low or no cost. Derby Days will feature Pewaukee HS students offering face painting throughout the event. Students have planned and organized their designs under the leadership of Kiley Clarquist, Robin Otto and Marcus Forney. In addition to these students the team of painters will include: Leila and Maia Cornelius, Sophie Schoenholtz, Makenna Chapman, Abby Hanson and Lexi Gonzalez. More to come on this too. Come support this great cause on Sunday June 12th from 10AM - 4 PM at LifeStriders S11 W29667 Summit Ave. Waukesha, Tickets: $35 Individual or, $250 per Triple Crown Team Available @ lifestriders.org/triplecrown
There have been so many great community service projects this year. Enjoy!
