Photography is the featured medium this week, but a common theme amongst this week's artists is how they really stretch this medium pushing the boundaries into other areas such as installation, printmaking and more.  Photography is my own preferred art medium and many of the artists I'm sharing with you are the ones who inspired my re-awakening to my artist self.  I love the work they do and in

May #K12ArtChallenge- Meet the Masters Week 3

Time-Based Media artists are featured this week.  I think I love them most of all because they make art that can be sculpted, felted, drawn, painted, installed, photographed and more.  They are also story tellers creating works that evolve over time, often with poignancy, sense of humor and cleverness.  Characters develop while inhabiting the  the worlds created by the artists through their sets and installations.

The prompt is a good one too, as evolving and revolving come to mind when I think of time as an element of art.  As always feel free to riff off these words and go further, deeper, if revolve becomes revolution That's Great!! I love language too and so word-play could inform your work further this week.

May #K12ArtChallenge Meet the Masters Week 2

Hoping you had a blast with your daily dose of fiber last week.  This week's featured artists are sculptors or installation artists.  They all have inspired me in some way.  One, Mary Nohl was reputed to be a witch in local Milwaukee lore.  She wasn't of course, but I remember when I was in high school it was very common to dare each other to go to her secluded and slightly spooky yard to view the sculptures that inhabited the place.  Little did I know some day I'd be an art teacher taking students on tours of the same place!

I hope you find inspiration too, with this week's Prompt as it can certainly be interpreted literally, but like last week look it up in the dictionary and explore all the other meanings.

Week 2:  May 8 - 14
Installation and Sculpture
PROMPT:  mother, mothering

May 8 Louise Bourgeois
May 9 Susan Cutts
May 10 Chiharu Shiota
May 11 Gerda Steiner & Jorg Lenzlinger

Your challenge is to respond to the prompt and be inspired by the artists.

"Busy" seems to be the best word to describe May.  School is winding down, gardens are coming into bloom, spring art celebrations abound and artist educators try to find time to make their own art.  That's right finding more time in this hectic month is your challenge.  Participate in the #k12artchallenge and I guarantee you'll have a blast.   The #k12artchallenge was founded by Arlene Shelton of Texas in collaboration with the #k12artchat. This month I'm hosting the Meet the Masters May challenge through my Twitter ID @bellafiore3.

The theme of the challenge is to introduce you to artists working in inspiring ways with their chosen media.  Each week there is one prompt and 7 artists whose work falls into the featured media.

Your challenge is to respond to the prompt and be inspired by the artists.
  • Use whatever media you wish to explore and have fun.
  • Consider trying the weekly media of the artists listed.
  • Choose to develop multiple pieces in response to the weekly prompt
    • OR....
  • Work on the same piece over the entire week adding details each day as you relate to the daily artist link.
  • Artist links will be shared daily with a bit more detail and questioning related to the Prompt for the week.

May 2 Caryl Gaubatz

May 4  Mandy Pattullo
