Students will finish learning about art from Content Area 7: West and Central Africa. Mr. Lamp will discuss Bahram Gur Fights the Karg, folio from the Great Il-Khanid Shahnama, The Court of Gayumars, folio from Shah Tahmasp's Shahnama, The Ardabil Carpet, and Buddha from Bamiyan, Afghanistan. We will begin class by reading pages 423 & 427 and taking notes on Buddhism and reading page 435 and take notes on Hinduism. Students will then view a comparison sheet between the two religions and complete a Venn diagram on the two religions. We will have a brief discussion on the important aspects of the two religions. Students will finish learning about art from Content Area 6: Africa. They will present their research from the final 5 works of art today. The bundu mask, ikenga (shrine figure), aka elephant mask, reliquary figure (byeri), and veranda post of enthroned king and queen (Opo Ogogoa) will be presented in class. Thursday 3/17 Students will begin learning about works of art from Content Area 7: West and Central Asia. They will receive the Content Area 7 documents and read through the Big Ideas and Essential Understandings at the beginning of class. Mr. Lamp will then discuss The Kaaba, folio from a Qur'an, and basin (Baptistere de St. Louis) in class. Students will also complete a Google Doc on the Great Mosque (Masjid-e Jameh). Students will continue learning about art from Content Area 5: Indigenous Americas today in class. We will briefly discuss questions on the Templo Mayor, which was homework from last class. After the short discussion, Mr. Lamp will lecture on works from North America. We will cover the Great Serpent Mound, Bandolier bag, Transformation mask, Codzi Cody's Painted elk hide, and Maria and Julian Martinez's Black-on-black ceramic vessel. Students will continue learning about art from Content Area 5: Indigenous Americas today in class. We will focus on art from current day Mexico and the the Ancestral Puebloan people from current day Colorado. Students will begin class by reading about Mayan civilization and completing a Google Doc on Yaxchilan. Mr. Lamp will go over the Google Doc with students in class. Next, Mr. Lamp will lecture on the Ruler's feather headdress and the Meza Verde cliff dwellings. At the end of class we will briefly discuss Aztec civilization and the Templo Mayor. Students will continue to learn about art from Egypt today in class. Mr. Lamp will briefly lecture on historical context from the Middle and New Kingdoms. Students will learn about art from Content Area 5: Indigenous Americas today in class. We will begin looking at art from South America. Students will learn about art from ancient Mesopotamia today in class. Mr. Lamp will briefly lecture on historical context from the area. After the lecture, students will independently work on a graphic organizer for an assigned work. This work will then be shared with the rest of the class in a lecture format. The works discussed will be Statues of votive figures, Standard of Ur, The Code of Hammurabi, Lamassu from the citadel of Sargon II, and the White Temple and its ziggurat. Students will learn about Modern architecture today in class. They will first read a brief article on modern architecture and a Wikipedia entry on modern architecture. This will allow us to establish an idea on what modern architects wished to achieve in their designs, and why they look so different from classical, Renaissance, and Neoclassical structures. Students will be introduced to Dada today in class. They will begin by reading page 835 & 856 in the textbook, adding "Dada" to their "Artistic Movements Since 1700" Google presentation, and adding dates, ideas, hallmarks, and Marchel Duchamp's Fountain to the slide. Mr. Lamp will then give a brief lecture on Dada. We will watch a short video on Marcel Duchamp's Fountain and read page 856-857 to complete the graphic organizer. We will discuss the work as a group. After our discussion, students will create holiday or greeting cards, based on a style of a Modern artist. They will select an artist, use their graphic organizer to assist with the hallmarks of the artist's style, and work to create a simple design, using the artist's style. Students will take Slide Quiz #12 at the beginning of class today. After the quiz they will read page 819 in the textbook on "Symbolism" and add Symbolism to their "Artistic Movements Since 1700" Google presentation with dates, ideas, hallmarks, and artists - Edvard Munch and Gustav Klimt. Mr. Lamp will briefly introduced Symbolism to the class. Next, students will work in groups of 3 on the assigned "Symbolists and Rodin" Google presentation. Each member of the group will select either Edvard Munch's The Scream, Gustav Klimt's The Kiss, or Auguste Rodin's Burghers of Calais, research the artist, complete the assigned graphic organizer, and find 3 additional works by the artist. Students will be introduced to Fauvism and Expressionism today in class. Students will learn about the Rococo style and art during the Enlightenment. They will begin by comparing and contrasting The Swing and A Philosopher Giving a Lecture at the Orrery without any context, purely examining the formal qualities of the work. Students will then break into groups and discuss an individual work of art and complete a graphic organizer.
