After the class has been introduced we will begin working on our first project of the semester, a slab built clay box. Click on the link below to view a Pinterest board with examples of ceramic boxes. Use these as inspirations for your box, consider the concepts, compositions, and craftsmanship of all the boxes. Mr. Lamp's Ceramic Box Board In your sketchbook, develop a theme for your box. Around your theme, develop 5 ways that you can implement texture into your work (imprinted, sculpted, or built). Next, develop 5 ideas for the form of your box. One must be a cube, one must be geometric but not a cube, one must be an organic form, and two are free choice or a reworked design of an earlier sketch. View the attached assignment sheet for further requirements. Friday 1/27 Students must have their sketches checked off during an individual meeting with Mr. Lamp. Once the sketch is okay'd, students will build their box from tagboard. This ensures that the students will have their slabs cut to proper sizes. During the 2nd half of the class, Mr. Lamp will give a short demo on rolling slabs and adding texture with the texture rollers. Unit One: Slab Built Clay BoxInstructions: Create an 6 inch high slab built clay box that has a definite concept and function. The vessel may have a variety of functions, such as, a box, a cookie jar, a teapot, a candle holder, etc. The box must demonstrate texture that relates to the concept of the work, and this may be added through imprinting, carving, piercing, or sculpting (may be additive or subtractive). In addition, the vessel must have feet, a removable lid, and at least one handle for the lid.

Assessments in This ClassAs always the artwork you create and the way you present it will influence the grades you receive in this class. We are in our second year as a district using Standards Based Grading. With each unit you will see a highly detailed form that describes the assignment and shows what Reportable Standards and Priority Standards are being covered in the unit. As we've done in the past you will participate in the critique process, which involves presenting your finished artwork and evaluating it in verbal and written form.
Getting StartedWe will be setting up our online and in class room learning environment in the first days of class. You will want to bookmark the following:
Supplies For daily class you need your laptop and you also will need a sketchbook and number two pencil. The Sketchbook should have at least 50 pages and be book or spiral bound. 8.5" x 11" or 9" x 12" is a perfect size. Writing an Artist StatementStudents will be required to submit an artist statement that follows the "ITS CLEAR" method for all art work.
